Direct notice to parents and guardians
Children’s Privacy Notice
Luminara is designed for a parent or legal guardian to create the family space, decide what information is added, connect each child’s device, and supervise use. This notice should be read before a child submits a message, photo, or other personal information.
1. Before a child uses Luminara
Luminara may collect personal information from a child when the child uses a family profile, sends a family message, uploads a proof photo, or uses the Guardian extension. Where the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”) applies, Luminara must provide direct notice and obtain verifiable parental consent before that collection unless a narrow legal exception applies.
The parent may consent to collection and internal use needed for Luminara without consenting to optional disclosure to non-integral third parties. Luminara does not currently disclose children’s information for advertising, targeted advertising, or unrelated third-party marketing.
2. Information collected from or about a child
- Name or nickname, profile identifier, avatar, color, and hashed login PIN selected by a grown-up.
- Schedules, completed activities, mission progress, badges, rewards, preferences, and approved app settings.
- Messages, announcements, reactions, friendship settings, and optional image attachments shared inside the family space.
- Optional task-proof photos. The browser resizes images before they are stored.
- Persistent device and family identifiers used to keep a connected device signed in and associated with the correct family.
- With Luminara Guardian: active time on approved apps, the approved apps opened and approximate time, blocked domains, extension status, and last-seen time.
- Technical data processed to deliver and secure the service, such as IP address, browser/device information, and request timestamps.
Luminara does not ask a child to provide a home address, telephone number, government identifier, precise geolocation, voice recording, or biometric identifier.
3. Why the information is collected
| Purpose | Business need |
|---|---|
| Family profile and progress | Show the child’s plan, learning progress, missions, and rewards across connected devices. |
| Messages and photos | Enable supervised family communication and grown-up review of completed work. |
| Guardian activity | Apply the grown-up’s approved-site choices and provide a limited time-on-task summary. |
| Identifiers and logs | Authenticate sessions, pair devices, prevent misuse, and keep the service reliable. |
Participation is not conditioned on providing more personal information than is reasonably necessary for a feature. Optional photos and messages are not required to view a schedule or use core planning features.
4. Who receives the information
- The child’s family: authorized grown-ups and intended participants on connected family devices.
- Google Firebase: the hosting, authentication, and database provider used to operate Luminara. This disclosure is integral to the cloud features of the service.
- Authorities or safety recipients: only when reasonably necessary to comply with law or protect a child or another person.
No child profile or child-created content is sold or disclosed for targeted advertising. Approved learning websites are separate services. Opening one may send information directly to that website under its own policy; grown-ups should review those policies before approving a site.
5. Parent and guardian choices
A verified parent or guardian may:
- Review the categories and specific personal information maintained about their child.
- Correct the child’s profile information.
- Request deletion of the child’s profile and associated content.
- Refuse further collection or use and withdraw consent.
- Allow collection needed for Luminara while refusing any optional non-integral third-party disclosure.
Use the grown-up dashboard where controls are available, or email ava.moonaro@gmail.com. Identity and parental authority may be verified before a request is completed.
6. Children’s data retention
Children’s personal information is retained only for the purposes and business needs listed above while the family space remains active, or until the grown-up deletes it or submits a verified deletion request. Deletion requests are targeted for completion within 30 days. Protected backup copies may remain for up to 90 additional days. Capacity limits may remove older photos, messages, announcements, and reactions sooner. Full details appear in the Data Retention Policy.
7. Changes to this notice
If Luminara materially changes how children’s personal information is collected, used, or disclosed, we will provide a new notice and obtain additional parental consent when required before applying the new practice.
